What you'll do
Port Louis is the most layered city in Mauritius, and we read it with you street by street. In one morning you cross the harbour that built the country, stand in the memorials to slavery and indenture that shaped its people, walk the market where the capital does its shopping, and pass the mosque, the pagoda and the pooja shop that sit within a few streets of one another. There is a dholl puri and a glass of cold sugarcane juice at the market, tea near the Jummah Mosque, and boulettes and sesame sweets in Chinatown. This is less a sightseeing round than a morning spent understanding the communities, the beliefs, the memories and the flavours that make Port Louis one of the most compelling cities in Mauritius. You have a local guide beside you the whole way, and we take care of the order, the timing and the meaning of everything you see.

How the morning starts
Your guide meets you on the Caudan Waterfront esplanade with a short welcome and an outline of the route ahead. Before we set off, we introduce the communities and the historical periods that shaped Port Louis, so the streets make sense once you are walking them.

The harbour and the monuments
Along the esplanade you pass the Granary, the sugar terminal, the Labourdonnais Waterfront hotel and Les Moulins de la Concorde. At the monuments to Mahé de La Bourdonnais, Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam and Sir Anerood Jugnauth, we trace the country from colonisation to independence and then to the Republic.
