For the more experienced
A guide is strongly recommended for the following routes.
Mauritius also has a few canyons that are significantly more technical and committed than the classic descents.
Rivière Perdue
is one of the most serious. Located deep in the Black River Gorges National Park, it follows a continuous canyon line with around ten rappels ranging from 10 to 60 meters, along with narrow sections, natural slides, and limited escape options. There is no network, and once engaged, the descent requires solid canyoning experience and good judgment.
The 500 Feet Waterfall
is the highest waterfall descent on the island. It consists of a sequence of large vertical rappels, typically around 60 meters, followed by a shorter section, and a final drop close to 70 meters. The exposure is significant, and rope management is essential throughout.
Around 20 canyoning routes have been equipped in Mauritius to date, forming the current core of the activity on the island. More than 20 additional potential sites have also been identified, but they are not equipped and are not accessible to the public. As many of these areas are protected natural sites, their future development will depend on careful dialogue with the relevant authorities, environmental considerations, and a responsible approach to safety and access.
