Kayaking in Mauritius

The west coast gives kayakers calm morning water, a slow tropical river and a lagoon that reaches landmarks like Crystal Rock and Benitiers Island. Guided trips leave Tamarin Bay at sunrise, in the evening light and out where dolphins are sometimes seen.

Good to know before you paddle

Where trips launch

Most departures leave from Tamarin Bay on the west coast, either up the quiet Tamarin River or out across the bay. The Benitiers Island trip crosses the lagoon further south, past Crystal Rock and beneath Le Morne Brabant.

Experience levels

River and bay outings are beginner friendly and open with a full briefing from your guide. The Benitiers crossing is a longer open water paddle that asks for good fitness, swimming ability and some kayak experience.

Wildlife etiquette

Dolphin encounters follow strict guidelines, observed quietly from the kayak and led entirely by the animals' behaviour. No sighting is ever guaranteed.

Time of day

Early morning brings the calmest water and is when the dolphin trips leave. Sunrise and sunset departures on the river are shorter and built around the light.

Common questions

Do I need kayaking experience in Mauritius?

Not for the river and bay trips, which start with a briefing and stay in sheltered water. The crossing to Benitiers Island is the exception and asks for good fitness, swimming ability and previous time in a kayak.

Is a kayak a good way to see dolphins?

It is one of the quietest ways to be on the water where dolphins pass, far from engine noise. They remain wild animals, so encounters depend on the day and are observed at a respectful distance.

What happens if conditions change?

Departures are planned around the calm of the morning, and your operator confirms or moves a trip when the water is not right. The booking is only worth having if the paddling is.
