Fishing in Mauritius

The deep water starts within a short run of the moorings here, which is why Mauritius fishes far bigger than its size. Charters leave Black River in the west and Pointe d'Esny in the south east, from heavyweight blue water trolling to a child's first session inside the lagoon.

Good to know before you cast

The waters

The west fishes the deep water off Black River and the reef marks around Ile aux Benitiers. The south east works the sheltered Grand Port lagoon inside the reef and heads beyond it for the blue water.

What swims here

Blue marlin, yellowfin tuna, wahoo and dorado offshore, giant trevally and dogtooth tuna on poppers and jigs, and tuna, bonito and dorado on lighter tackle. Seasons shape the fishing and no charter ever promises a catch.

Beginners and families

The lagoon charters suit complete beginners and children, with skippers who coach newcomers and leave experienced anglers to fish. The family trip pairs gentle fishing with a snorkelling stop.

The boats

Every charter here reserves the whole boat for your group, with rods, tackle and bait supplied. Trips run from three hour family sessions to nine hours offshore, and the offshore departures leave early.

Common questions

Do I need experience to fish in Mauritius?

No. The lagoon and family charters are built for first-timers, and on the sport boats the crew coaches anyone who wants it. Experienced anglers are simply left to fish.

What can be caught, honestly?

The species are real and so is the ocean. Marlin, tuna, wahoo and dorado run offshore in their seasons, and trevally and snapper hold the reefs, but no responsible charter guarantees a catch on any given day.

Is the tackle provided?

Yes. Rods, reels, lures and bait come with every charter here, including heavy tackle and fighting gear on the big game boats. Bring sun protection and the crew handles the rest.
