Le Morne peninsula and the underwater waterfall illusion seen from the air

The underwater waterfall in Mauritius is a natural illusion off Le Morne in the island’s south-west. Trails of sand and sediment, the lagoon’s pale seabed and the contrast with deeper water create the impression of a fall beneath the sea. To seek this perspective, Andeor offers helicopter flights from Bel Ombre through its partner. Your choice depends on passenger numbers, budget and whether you want to share the aircraft or book it privately.

Choose between helicopter and seaplane

The shared aim is an aerial view of Le Morne, but the journey differs considerably by aircraft. The helicopter circuit from Bel Ombre lasts approximately 15 minutes. The seaplane from Grand Gaube reaches this area on its 100-minute route after following the east and south coasts.

The short 15-minute seaplane flight stays in the north-east and does not reach the underwater waterfall. Compare each route’s actual destination before its starting price. For a couple, the helicopter allows seats to be booked on the same aircraft, whereas each seaplane carries only one passenger beside the pilot.

If your only priority is the Le Morne viewpoint, start with routes that reach it. If you also want to see a long stretch of coastline from the air, examine the complete seaplane route. Include the transfer from your accommodation and expected visibility in the decision.

To understand the landscape before choosing a flight, read why the underwater waterfall is a natural illusion. This guide focuses on ways to seek that view from the air.

Understand what the aerial images show

The water does not drop into a chasm like a waterfall on land. The effect comes from how the landscape appears from the air. The lagoon colours and lines drawn by sediment create an impression of depth and movement that does not look the same from the shore.

A coastal walk lets you appreciate the mountain and lagoon, but it does not replace an aerial view. Even in flight, the illusion’s appearance depends on light, angle and conditions at the time. The route aims for this viewpoint without guaranteeing the exact image you have seen in a photograph.

Choose a shared flight from Bel Ombre

The shared flight Andeor offers through its partner lasts around 15 minutes. It leaves Bel Ombre heliport, follows the coast towards Baie du Cap and La Prairie, passes near Îlot Fourneau and reaches the viewpoint off Le Morne before returning to Bel Ombre. You reserve a seat in a helicopter shared with other travellers.

Each aircraft can carry up to six passengers. Departure requires at least four booked seats in total across all reservations. A couple can therefore book two seats without forming its own group of four. If that minimum is not met, our partner informs you on the morning of the flight and offers a full refund or postponement to the following day.

To compare itineraries from the north, consult the five seaplane flights from Grand Gaube. Check the exact route rather than assuming every scenic flight reaches Le Morne.

Book the same circuit privately for your group

The private flight from Bel Ombre also accommodates up to six passengers and follows the approximately 15-minute coastal circuit. A private booking changes who you travel with but does not automatically add flying time. It suits you if you want the aircraft for your own group and prefer comparing a total price with the cost of several individual seats.

The partner checks passenger and baggage weights before boarding. Provide the requested details when booking. A private reservation does not promise a particular seat or seating arrangement.

Calculate your group’s budget

Compare the current amount for the format, date and entire group. Check whether the price applies per person or to the private group, then add separately confirmed transfers and extras. The final quote is more useful than starting prices for different services.

These amounts cover the flight. Hotel transfers and meals are excluded. Hotel or landing fees may also be charged separately by the departure site. A displayed price does not confirm an available departure on your date and should be checked in the booking summary.

Arrange the meeting point and journeys

The meeting point is Bel Ombre heliport in Savanne district. Follow the access instructions and reporting time in your confirmation. The advertised 15 minutes refer to the approximate aerial circuit. Allow separately for travel from your accommodation, boarding preparation and the return journey.

Andeor can arrange a separate transfer through Seke. Share your accommodation, intended date and passenger count to coordinate travel with the confirmed flight. This transport service needs its own quote and is not included in the flight amounts discussed here.

Leave room in your day

Flights remain subject to weather, aircraft availability and operational conditions. Avoid a tightly timed appointment immediately after the advertised return. If the illusion is your priority, choose a route that specifically mentions Le Morne instead of assuming all scenic flights pass over the same place.

Wear comfortable clothes suited to the weather and closed-toe shoes. Avoid loose scarves and bulky jackets near the helicopter. Tell Andeor about any assistance needs when booking so boarding can be prepared with our partner.

Good to know

Can you see the underwater waterfall from the beach?

From the beach, you see the lagoon and Le Morne’s landscape. The shape resembling a waterfall appears mainly from an aerial perspective. A visit to the shore cannot promise the same view as photographs taken from the air.

Do four people need to book the shared flight together?

You can reserve one or two seats. The four-seat minimum applies across all bookings for the same departure. If it is not reached, our partner offers the refund or postponement to the following day set out in this offer’s terms.

Does the private flight last longer than the shared flight?

Both Bel Ombre offers presented here describe a circuit of around 15 minutes. A private booking reserves the aircraft for your group. It does not lengthen the route by itself.
